Aalo-Channay Achari : Picklish Potatoes with Chick peas
You can make this spiced version at home usually brought in from Halwa Puree vendors.
You will need following ingredients to cook for four people (considering you have cooked other dishes on the menu too!)
- 1 Can of Chick peas (or about half kilo boiled Chick peas). You can also use small sized chick peas
- 1 Potatoe medium sized (cut it in small cubes)
- 2 onions medium sized (sliced thinly)
- 3 tomatoes medium sized (sliced)
- 1-2 tbsp- Mango Pickle (use Masala of Pickle, some pickled mangoes and oil)
- 1/2 tsp Kalonji (Black Seeds)
- 1 tsp Dhaniya powder (Coriander powder)
- 1/2 tsp Haldi ( Turmeric Powder)
It all starts with the basic i.e. brown sliced onions in 1 tbsp oil. Put tomatoes in it.
You can grind the mixture in a blender or let the tomatoes cook enough to form a gravy. Cook till the oil comes up and the tomatoes-onion purée changes to a little darker color.
You can add salt, red chillies, Pickle Masala, Turmeric Powder, Coriander Powder and Black Seeds at this point. Add 1/2 tsp salt as Pickle Masala will also have salt.
Now add the chick peas and potatoes. Mix them well with the purée.
Pour about 1 1/2 cup of warm water – enough for the potatoes to cook. Also, water is required to leave some gravy. Let it boil till the potatoes are cooked and flavours combine nicely. Add more water if needed. Don’t put too much water at once or the chick peas will break.
Taste the gravy once the potatoes become soft. Check for Salt and Chillies. If you feel like making it more pickle-ish in taste, add more of the same Pickle Masala, mix and cook a little more.
Simple and Quick.
Serve it with Parathas.
