New Year`s eve is a joyous event for everyone around the world as it brings up a new day with new beginnings and hopes. So this year, as you countdown to the new one, make a resolution to yourself of trying all these bizarre but equally tempting food ideas from different corners of the world that are said to bring luck to your year ahead. In fact, some of them are perfect for the foodies who are a little lazy to do the effort. Here you go:

1. Grapes in Spain

Well, basically, you don’t even have to cook for this. Just buy the best bunch you find and wait till the clock ticks twelve to eat exactly twelve grapes.

It is believed they bring you prosperity in the coming year. It became popular in the early 1900s when a farmer wanted to sell all his grapes one new year because he had an extremely good harvest that year. What I recommend is that you get seedless grapes for this purpose so you don’t remember you year starting with a gag.

2. Herring in Poland

This silvery fish determines abundance in wealth for your year.herringIt is not only famous in Poland but all of the Western Europe as they are found in majority in throughout that region. Also, their shiny, beautiful color resembles that of coins. Hence, your luck in wealth.

3. Shortbread and whiskey in Scotland

This tradition might differ a little from the other countries. In Scotland, people visit each other on new year`s eve and take along some gifts.shortbread and whiskeyThe most appreciated ones would be a little booze and a rich fruitcake to accompany that. This norm, also known as the “first footing” , is carried out by the first person who enters your house on new year.

4. Oliebollen in the Netherlands

These round doughnuts, smothered in powdered sugar, can be made out of diced apples, or candied citrus peels in your batter and taste best when eaten fresh out of the oil.

oliebollen

This word literally means “oily spheres” that the people of Holland like to munch upon as the clock strikes midnight on the 31st of December. This, just like all other traditions, is said to bring joy and good luck to your life in the fore coming year.

5. Soba noodles in Japan

Soba, being the Japanese name for buckwheat, is made into long and thin noodles for the new year`s feast, according to the natives, it is to bring longevity to your good omens because of its shape.

They are very soft and gentle to cut into which also symbolizes letting go of the hardships of the previous year. Usually served with a crispy broth or a fishcake, soba noodles are my personal favorites in this list.
