As a mom, I can relate to some common internet memes telling us how a mother spends her time while driving by herself, taking a bathroom break, and picking up the groceries. It’s funny how I can’t think of any other ‘alone time’ we manage to get. Sigh, such is life.

Motherhood is bliss. And in most instances I’d say that’s true. But as much as you enjoy cuddling your children and seeing them grow day by day, it’s just as annoying when there’s constant tattling, screaming, running in every direction, whining, hair pulling, and basically throwing tantrums all the time. By noon, you begin to look like a ‘mombie’ [(n.) Mom-be: A sleep deprived super mom who feeds on caffeine and survives on sticky kisses and messy smiles. Mombies are master multi-taskers].

*Silently nods in agreement*

Even though one gets used to a messy bun and clothes stained with baby food, there’s always a desire to dress up and go out with your girlfriends for a little ha-ha-hee-hee once in a while. You essentially want to be around adults for a change.

I recently asked a friend where she wanted to meet up. “Bas somewhere quiet and peaceful, my toddler is enough to fill my quota of noise every day,” she replied. I think we all can relate.

With that in mind, I’ve made a list of the place I enjoy visiting with my friends for the calming ambiance and wonderful food. Check it out:
Dilli Darwaza

Reasons to go: 1. Nihari! 2. The fact that I barely get time to make it myself at home. 3. A peaceful place; peaceful enough to talk to people your own age (I hope my kid isn’t reading this). Seriously though, their nihari is great, and they have different kinds: Aam (simple), Khaas (special), Mughlai, Raj, and Shahi. All are available in beef or chicken, and are a treat for desi appetites.

Khiva

Not a bad place to go to if you want peace of mind (or a piece of chicken for that matter!). Khiva is a pleasant eatery that offers great desi food. Most mums wouldn’t regret going here because of the calm atmosphere and good barbecue. Moreover, I think any food tastes good if you know you don’t’ have to stand over a hot stove and make it yourself (also, it ruins your carefully blow dried hair :/). Anyway, they also have a decent high-tea, which is a big YES for most mothers.

Andaz

Okay, at the risk of sounding too promotional, Andaz is one of my favorite places to go. I love the interior; it’s very ethnic and the food has a very different taste. Yet another great place for Asian cuisine. Plus it’s located in Saidpur Village, a very serene part of the city. Their exquisite range of food items always manages to calm my mommy nerves.

Table Talk

I’ve been here quite a bit of times with my mom and now realize why it’s a good place to have food. The food is great for one, and there’s a grocery store right next door! (Although mum and I did it the other way ‘round; whenever we get tired of shopping, we just end up having the famous thaali from Table Talk.) If you’re hanging out with your friends around this place, your MUST try their thaali! They have a delectable selection, especially the tamarind fish. Table Talk is the go-to place for meet ups because it’s serene and breathable; unlike most places that blare unnerving music!

Heng Chang

It’s a big YES for days when “Chalo Chinese khanay chalain,” is the consensus. This place is not just great for moms, but has an enjoyable ambiance for families as well. So check out Heng Cheng when your Kung Pao Chicken craving is out of control!
